Summary
We operated 122 patients with bilateral vocal cord paralysis during the past 10 years.
Objective confirmation of the improved glottic function was obtained by spirometry, bodyplethysmography, sonography and laryngography. All the patients were decanulated. A substantial improvement in breathing with a virtually unchanged voice was achieved in all of the patients. The good functional results are attributed to the fact that the vocal cord substance is retained and that a functionally active vocal cord is achieved.
